What prompted you and Walsh to start 40 Days of Dating? Having the boundaries of a project allowed us to take on that challenge. It really was a once—in—a—lifetime opportunity. Did you see this as an entrepreneurial feat or just a clever idea for public consumption? As creative people, we love the process of making something provocative that could potentially inspire and touch people.
We wanted to [first] approach the project with as much sincerity as possible. As designers, how did you prepare for the final outcome? Is that important in terms of making it? Jessica and I just put everything out there.
Did anything interesting happen? Truthfully, I am quite nervous. However, I know that when an opportunity scares me, I must go for it.

One of the most rewarding and surprising aspects of the result of releasing the blog was that we connected to people and started a dialogue about love and relatinoships Ultimately, we knew that our stories and issues were not unlike a lot of people’s issues.
As creative people, we love the process of making something provocative that could potentially inspire and touch people. Naturally, as designers and art directors, it was important to us that 40 Days have an identity, however, it wasn’t until the project was over that we designed the site, shot the videos, photographed our items, asked for lettering contributions, etc.
We wanted to approach the project with as much sincerity as possible.

I think I have have some sort of guard up preventing myself from seeing Tim as anything more than a very close friend. As his relationship patterns are the opposite of mine, a part of me and that if we were to really date, one of us might wind up getting hurt. So, Jessica and Timothy have finished their short, stressful attempt at dating in public. For those unfamiliar with the ‘project’, as its protagonists called it, 40 Days of Dating is a blog created by two young Manhattan-based designers, Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman, on which they publish an account of a compelling experiment.

TG: The project enabled me to be more honest with myself about wanting to find a relationship with someone worth it, someone great. Jessie made me realize that.
